Can I See My Chiropractor After Surgery?

The short answer to this question is yes, but it is slightly more complicated than that. Every surgery is different and may require different amounts of recovery time before your Chiropractor can see you. We may also be able to modify our treatment approach to accommodate the type of surgery that you are having.

I often find that my patients’ don’t always realize the repercussions of surgery. We will go through a few different kinds of surgery in this article and go over the pros and cons of each. I want to say that I am not always against surgery. Some surgery is absolutely necessary. Chiropractors are great at helping with the effects on the body after you have surgery. Keep this in mind as part of your recovery plan.

1. Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion is typically a last straw type of surgery. Basically, a surgeon installs metal plates to brace several segments of the spine together so that they cannot move. This is typically done in either the lumbar vertebra (lower back) or cervical vertebra (neck). This surgery is performed to stabilize the spine and prevent excess movement.

There are a two main reasons for spinal fusion:

  • Torn ligaments – This usually happens during major trauma, such as a car accident. The ligaments tear and can no longer maintain proper spinal structure. If this happens, it is absolutely necessary to do surgery. Major spinal cord injuries can happen if this surgery is not done. You are often not even given an option to have this surgery done.
  • Disc herniation/Degenerative Disc Disease – This surgery is often elective. The option to do surgery is often based on severity of symptoms and amount of herniation/degeneration.

Pros Of Spinal Fusion

  • Prevent excess movement of the spine.
  • Thought to stop degeneration at the vertebra that are fused.
  • Will often help with nerve irritation at levels fused.

Cons of Spinal Fusion

  • Causes excess movement at the spinal levels directly above and below the segments fused.
  • May cause increased/more rapid degeneration at the levels directly above and below the segments fused.
  • Scar tissue in the area of surgery that may cause further restricted movement.
  • Surgical complications, time off of work, & pain during recovery.
After spinal fusion, Chiropractors are unable to adjust segments that are fused. We can however adjust other segments to minimize spinal degeneration and preserve the overall function of the spine.

2. Carpal Tunnel Surgery

I have written an entire article on carpal tunnel syndrome that you can get a better idea of what it is. The surgery is done to reduce median nerve entrapment that can cause tingling and numbness in the hands. The surgery cuts the flexor retinaculum to reduce pressure on the median nerve.

Pros of Carpal Tunnel Surgery

  • Reduce pressure on the median nerve, which should reduce tingling and numbness in the hands.
  • Cool scar?

Cons of Carpal Tunnel Surgery

  • Instability of the wrist.
  • Have to wear a wrist brace to stabilize the wrist.
  • Increased probability of a future carpal tunnel surgery.
  • No relief of symptoms (If the cause was not at the wrist)
I am not a huge fan of carpal tunnel surgery and feel that Chiropractic care is a much more effective treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. Chiropractic care can also help with the after effects of carpal tunnel surgery.

3. Hysterectomy

Having a hysterectomy is a hugely personal decision. I make no judgement on whether someone does or does not want to have this surgery. I will support whatever choice you may make. I use this surgery as an example of how we can modify Chiropractic care to accommodate how we can treat patients.

The position that you are put in during surgery and incision take a while to heal and recover from. Typically during Chiropractic care, you will have to lay facedown on the table. We can utilize an Activator to treat you while sitting in a chair while also having access to all of the spinal segments. This can help to reduce pain and inflammation during the recovery process to speed recovery and reduce pain.

How Chiropractic Can Offer An Alternative To Surgery

There are many other types of surgeries that you may be considering. You may also be wondering if your Chiropractor can help with your condition as an alternative to surgery. Chiropractors help to maximize the function of the body and help it to function at its optimum level. Talk to your Chiropractor about the problem areas that you may be having, so that they can offer alternative treatment options to surgery. If it doesn’t help, you can always have surgery, and then your Chiropractor can help you with the recovery.
