Did you know that in 2010, 32.8% of all births in the United States were by C-section? In 1965, the C-section rate was 4.5%. That is nearly a 750% increase in only 45 years! You must be asking yourself: Why the dramatic increase in surgical intervention? Surely it must be for health and safety of mother and baby, or maybe humans having been delivering babies wrong for the last 4000 or more years! Before we discuss the possible reasons, let’s first look at the differences between the two delivery methods.

Natural Childbirth And Chiropractic Care

Let’s start with the way that we have been delivering for thousands of years. Vaginal, or natural childbirth has been around since the beginning of time. Women’s bodies’ are designed to perform this task very well. This delivery method is very beneficial to both mom and baby. Through natural childbirth, mom is in tune with her body, and can feel the natural impulses to push and relax. She can control how hard to push and is more “in charge” of her delivery.

I am not saying that this process is a walk in the park, and I am not saying that I have any idea of what it feels like. What I am saying is, if your body couldn’t handle it, it wouldn’t be designed the way it is. This process allows all of the hormones to go through their natural progression and stimulate lactation, placenta delivery, and start the process of returning things to pre-pregnancy status.  Not to mention, it is very good for your baby.

Your baby has been living in a very comfortable environment for 40 weeks (even more comfortable if mom was under chiropractic care). Regardless of the way a baby is delivered, he/she is expected to live in an environment with germs, noise, gravity, light, and many other things that were not present in the womb. Do you think that the stresses and pressures placed on the baby as it passes through the birth canal and comes into contact with beneficial bacteria from mom is more or less beneficial than being pulled by the neck or leg out of an artificial opening, without getting any beneficial bacteria or stresses to prepare them for the real world? I think that natural birth wins this comparison.

C-sections: Necessity Vs. Convenience?

I am not completely against C-sections. There is a time and a place for them, and I am grateful that they are available for those that truly need them. However, 32.8% is not a reasonable rate of necessary c-sections. Decreasing numbers of OBGYN’s due to high malpractice premiums, makes it more efficient to do c-sections than spend time waiting for a natural birth. There is a higher payout for surgery as well. I am not saying this is the sole motivator, but borderline cases may be pushed over the edge if a doctor can get paid more for less time. Inducing labor with artificial hormones can push labor too far too fast and result in a woman’s body not being ready to deliver. This can lead to the need for a c-section by artificial means.

The most important thing to remember with any healthcare decision is that the choice is yours.  Be informed about all of the things that may happen during delivery. Know how substances like pitocin, pain medications, and epidurals can affect your body and how they may affect your ability to deliver naturally. Midwives, doulas, and significant others can also play a huge role in helping you get the care and type of delivery that you want.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy not only can help with back pain and tension, but also with the undue pressure placed on the developing little one. If mom is in proper alignment, baby can be healthy, and the delivery process can go much more smoothly. Remember that if you need a Chiropractor in Davenport, Iowa, that we are the ones to call.
