Chiropractor in the Quad Cities Discusses OTC Medicine

Chiropractors in Davenport By: Clay Kuethe D.C. (Dr. Clay)

I want to start off by saying; there is a time and a place for over the counter medications. If you have an injury and taking some aspirin will help to take the edge off, there shouldn’t be any problem with that. You realize that you are going to get better and taking something is a short term Band-Aid to help you make it through the situation.

I want to discuss a common oversight when taking OTC meds: masking the problem. I know a lot of people that will pop two or three (Insert OTC Med Here) before going out and doing activity as a preventative measure for pain. This makes sense if your only concern is pain. However, this is faulty logic. While you are indeed preventing yourself from feeling pain during that activity, you are not addressing the underlying problem that is causing that pain. In reality, you are probably increasing your potential for injury.

So let’s imagine that your shoulder, or knee, or ankle, or elbow, or back, or neck is in pain. There is always a reason for the pain, it is our body’s way of telling us that we should back off and not do something. The OTC med reduces the inflammation for a period of time, and this in turn causes us to feel better. We can then use the area that was painful. The problem is that we can then put more stress on the area of pain than we should because we don’t feel the warning signs of pain. Your potential for making the problem worse is very large.

If you are going to use OTC meds, please do not use them before your activity. This way you will be able to realize the limits of your body. If you need to use them after the activity, there should be no problem with that. The most important thing is to find out what is causing the underlying problem, and address that issue. This way you can enjoy the things that you love doing without the need of OTC meds. Remember that if you need a Chiropractor in the Quad Cities choose Premier Chiropractic. Get Adjusted and Be Well!
