Chiropractors In Davenport FAQ

We get a lot of phone calls at the office asking questions about cost, services provided, and frequency of care. I thought I would take some time today and answer a few of the most common questions.

Does A Chiropractic Adjustment Hurt?

This is one of those tricky questions. Typically the chiropractic adjustment does not hurt. Often times a person will wait until they are in an extreme amount of pain or have a serious lack of mobility before they seek out treatment.  This means that muscles are extremely tight and are moving in a non-functional pattern. Chiropractic adjustments correct joint mis-alignments and restore functional motion. To go from non-functional to functional can sometimes be painful as the muscles become acclimated to the correct way of moving. In order to reduce the muscular restriction that has taken place, I will often perform some myofascial release (MFR) to loosen up tight musculature. This allows the muscles to adapt to the functional position more quickly after the adjustment. The muscular component of the subluxation is often what will be painful. If we can find the subluxation before it begins to cause noticeable problems, then the chiropractic adjustment usually does not hurt.

How Often Do I Have To Come In?

This again is a tricky question. It will often depend on what your condition is, the severity of your condition, and the underlying cause of the condition. For example, let’s say that you just recently started to have headaches after getting a new pillow. I would ask questions about sleep during your visit and often find out that the pillow is causing the problem.  I would correct the cervical (neck) subluxation that is causing the headache (typically it is a cervical subluxation) and get you an orthopedic cervical pillow that would put your neck in the correct alignment. This would probably resolve itself within a visit and you could come in as needed.

Another example would be a car accident. Many different areas can be injured during a car accident depending on the direction you were hit from, how fast everyone was going, and whether or not you saw it coming. In this treatment plan we would set functional goals to be met (ie.. being able to walk one mile without low back pain). Once these goals are met, you would once again be able to come in as needed. By the way, we have very good success with patients that were in car accidents in the Quad Cities, so be sure to give us a call (shameless promotion).

Sometimes there is an underlying structural problem like degenerative disc disease that can never be fully resolved. This can cause chronic pain. Chiropractic care can often help to relieve the pain for a certain amount of time, and help to prevent the condition from getting any worse. Again, we would give you the control over your care and you could determine how often you needed to be seen to help with your condition. There are many more examples that I could go through, if you have specific questions, please feel free to give me a call.

Once I Start Seeing A Chiropractor, Do I Have To Keep Coming Forever?

This is one of the most common misconceptions about Chiropractic treatment. As stated previously, once we correct the major issues and get you back to a point where you can decide if treatment is right for you, then you can be seen as needed. Why people often think that they have to come forever, is that a Chiropractic adjustment from a Chiropractor in Davenport improves the function of your body, improves nervous system function, and releases feel good endorphins. Basically, you become more aware of how your body is doing, and you can tell when something is not right sooner. Then you call your Chiropractor to correct the issue before it becomes a major problem. You don’t have to come forever, you just know that you will be healthier and feel better if you get adjusted once in awhile.
