5 New Year’s Resolutions That You Can Keep!

Let’s face it, New Year’s Resolutions are hard to keep. We have these pie in the sky goals that are not immediately attainable. They will take months and months of work to reach. So when we don’t see results in two or three weeks, we throw them out the window and go back to our bad habits because nothing works. This is why our goals should actually accomplish something every day and over a longer period will help us to attain our ultimate goals of weight loss, exercising, eating better, and more confidence. So what are we waiting for? Let’s get started with some easy resolutions to keep.

Chiropractor In Davenport Suggests Drinking Water1. Drink Half Of Your Body Weight In Ounces Of Water!

Many people do not realize that they are dehydrated. This can lead to feeling tired, lethargic, and leave our skin dry and cracked. Hydration is important for normal cell function. When you do not drink enough water, your cells cannot utilize the food that you eat with maximum efficiency.

Your body is essentially 70% water. You go to the bathroom on average 7-10 times per day. If you are not replenishing at least half of your body weight in ounces of water, you are slowly dehydrating yourself. The minimum amount of water that you should be drinking every day is half of your body weight in ounces of water.

2. Start Exercising!

Do you remember the really in shape person that sat on their butt all day and did nothing? Neither do  I. Exercise is important. It elevates your heart rate. Your heart is a muscle, and if you don’t exercise that muscle every now and then, it will become weak. Weakness leads to atrophy (muscle loss) and all of the sudden, your heart can’t last as long because it is not strong.

Exercising not only helps your heart, but it starts building all of your other muscles too. Muscles have a higher energy demand than fat, and therefore burn more calories. The bigger your muscles are, the more calories that you will burn every day.

Start slow, it doesn’t take much to start a good habit. Walking 5-10 minutes per day will start a habit that you can build on. This can eventually lead to longer walks, running, and lifting weights. Eventually your muscle mass will increase and your weight will go down. **Important Note: Always consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program!

Everybody has heard that you are supposed to get 8 hours of sleep right? This is not necessarily the truth. It takes our bodies 1.5 hours to go through a full sleep cycle. Some of this is light sleep, and some of this is deep sleep. The light sleep is at the beginning and end while the deep sleep is more towards the middle and back end of the cycle.

We have all had the feeling of waking up after one of these cycles. You wake up feeling amazing and not tired at all. You wonder what you did differently than all of the other times that you have slept before. So, the magic numbers for the amount of sleep that you need are 6 hours, 7.5 hours, or 9 hours. If you sleep for any of these amounts of time, you will wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go.

So the question that you are asking yourself is: Why do 10-20 minute power naps work so well? The answer is that you never make it to the deep sleep cycle. You get through a light sleep cycle, which gives the brain just enough of a break to be more focused and energized.

It sounds simple, and it is. Most people dig right in to the main course. It is tasty and what we have been longing for. The problem is that it is often high in calories and lacking in nutrition. By adding a fruit and vegetable to the beginning of the meal, you are making sure that you are getting the important nutrients to keep  your body working well. You also fill up on foods that are lower in calories which can help with your portion control.

The important part of this resolution is that it works every time that you do it. If you forget a meal or two, it is no big deal. You can always start at your next meal. Challenge yourself to try new fruits and vegetables and you may expand your palette and find something new that you like!
