If you have lived in Davenport, the Quad Cities, or anywhere in the Midwest for that matter, you have undoubtedly had to shovel at some point. When we are young, this doesn’t seem like a big deal. Getting it done quickly seems much more important than having proper form and doing it safely. What we do now can have a big impact on future health and capabilities to do the things we love.

So what are some of the major things that you need to know to shovel properly? The most important thing to remember is:

1. Not to overdo it by lifting as much snow as possible each time.

2. Take lighter loads to ease the stress placed on your spine.

3. Bend your knees and lift with your legs.

4. Lift closer to your center of gravity (Not way out in front or to the side).

5. Keep your back straight and bend just at the waist if you need to bend forward.

6. When pushing snow, don’t have your arm and shoulder out to the side. Keep your shovel centered in your body at about the belly button.

7. When lifting snow, stand on the side of the shovel and do a proper lift.

8. When throwing snow,  make sure to rotate your hips and not your low back to ensure proper spinal alignment.

10. Do not lean forward, you can lose traction and put your shoulders at risk for injury.

But what if I have a snow blower? You must still exercise caution. Never put your hands near the rotating part of apparatus while the key is in the ON position. Maintain good posture and stand directly behind the machine with the handle as close to your abdomen as possible.

Remember to dress properly. Hat, gloves, and a warm jacket will keep your muscles warm and loose. You should also do a five minute warm up of jumping jacks, squats, or marching in place to prevent injury. Core stability exercises are also a great way to prevent injury while shoveling and in everyday life.
