What Happens When I Disagree With My Doctor?

Davenport Chiropractors

By:

I hear this a lot in my office, “do whatever you think is best, you’re the doctor.” I feel honored that my patient’s value my knowledge and opinion, but that should not be the only thing that matters. I often have to tell people that they are the boss when they go to the doctor. You are paying the doctor to do a job, that means that the ultimate decision is yours.

This is counterintuitive to many. We are so ingrained to hold doctor’s opinions in such high regard, that we often give them full autonomy when it comes to our healthcare decisions. Many people are also afraid that their doctor will be angry at them if they are questioned. This should not be, if you don’t understand your treatment, how do you know it will make you better?

Remember That You Are The Boss

Chiropractors and medical doctors have an extensive knowledge of the human body. You should listen to them, they are very smart. But, just like everybody else in the world, they are people. People have opinions and preferences, so just because they typically do things in a certain way, it doesn’t mean that is the only or best way to do them.

If you have a question about something, ask it. If the doctor says something that doesn’t make sense, make them clarify it. You don’t need to understand all of the technical things, but you should get the basic gist of what is going on so that you can make an informed decision.

Ask If There Is A Different Treatment Option

Just by asking if there is a different way to treat something, can open up a dialogue about how to make you better. Remember that a doctor makes money by seeing as many patients as possible, if they can tell you it is problem x and to take prescription y, you can be in and out in 2 minutes. Make them earn what they are charging.

I always tell patients if they don’t understand what is going on, then they didn’t ask enough questions or the healthcare provider didn’t explain it simply enough. I love explaining what is going on with patients and always ask if they have any questions about what we are going to do and again at the end to make sure they understand everything that we have talked about.

What If The Doctor Doesn’t Agree With What You Want To Do?

This is a tough one, and it is not a one size fits all answer. There are many reasons why they may not agree with what you want to do.

They may:

  • Think that what you want to do will actually make you worse. In this case they cannot go along with what you want to do, it is against our code of ethics.
  • Not understand your point of view, or be up to date with what you are suggesting. Many healthcare providers don’t want to appear like they don’t know what they are talking about. They may refuse because they don’t understand.
    • Personally on this point, I have certain things as a Chiropractor and as a person that I don’t know as much about. In these cases, I simply tell the patient that I don’t know enough about something to make an opinion on. If your Chiropractor or doctor tells you this, respect that they are being honest with you and don’t want to give you false information.
  • Have a God complex. I like to think the best of people, but when you spend years studying something and someone argues with your opinion, sometimes you get a “I’m better than you” opinion of yourself. No matter what you say, they will disagree, just to say they were right. If this is the case, I recommend finding a new doctor.

Find A Chiropractor/Doctor That You Can Talk To

Find someone who you can discuss things and are not at odds with all of the time, but make sure they are honest with you and tell you if your thoughts are not right. I have had patient’s tell me things that they have heard that are completely untrue, and I have to call them out on it. Just because they are the boss, doesn’t mean they are always right.
