Cervical Pillow In Davenport Iowa What Type Of Pillow Should I Use?

Davenport Chiropractors

I get this question all of the time. Everybody is different, so you need a pillow that that is somewhat dynamic to accommodate for different body types. You also need a pillow that can accommodate different sleeping positions. So let’s rate and discuss the different sleeping positions.

  1. Back
  2. Side
  3. Stomach

1. Sleeping On Your Back

Sleeping on your back is best. There are a few reasons for this.

  • You tend not to twist.
  • It allows for better alignment of your neck.
  • It allows the ribs to expand properly while breathing.

This is assuming that you are using a proper pillow. It is still the best position overall. There are some potential problems if you are not using a good pillow.

  • Your pillow is too big and puts strain on your neck.
  • Your pillow is too small and doesn’t support your neck.
  • Your pillow deforms (gets compressed) throughout the night.

2. Sleeping On Your Side

Sleeping on your side can lead to potential problems whether you are using a good pillow or not.

  • Your pillow is too big and puts strain on your neck.
  • Your pillow is too small and doesn’t support your neck.
  • You twist your lower body so your spine is not in the proper alignment.
  • You put more compression on one side of your rib cage.

Having a good pillow can minimize the strain on your neck but cannot eliminate the twisting and compression of your rib cage.

3. Sleeping On Your Stomach

Don’t sleep on your stomach! Sleeping on your stomach is the worst possible position to sleep in.

  • You have to completely rotate your neck putting a lot of strain on it.
  • You tend to put an arm over head, putting your shoulder in a compromised position.
  • Putting an arm over head, expands the ribs on that side, causing strain.
  • You tend to bend a leg up, which causes rotation in the lower back and puts stress on your hip.

If you sleep on your stomach, please do not use a pillow. Using a pillow will only cause more problems.

What Pillow Do I Recommend?

I recommend a good cervical pillow. The one that I sell in my office is a Tri-core pillow. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. The concave middle allows you to sleep on your back with the proper curve in your neck. There is a large side for bigger people and a smaller side for smaller people.
  2. If you are a side sleeper, you can position your head at the right depth for proper support, using the concavity. If you toss and turn, it allows for easy transition from sleeping on your back to sleeping on your side while still providing proper support.
  3. The pillow has a fiber core that is durable and does not compress during the night. I use this pillow and have had it for over three years without a problem.

If you have any questions about a pillow or are interested in purchasing one, please feel free to give the office a call or send me and e-mail.
