Probiotics seem to be everywhere these days. You can find them in yogurt, in pill form, and in certain types of foods and beverages. Many people have three main questions about probiotics:

  1. Why Should I Take Probiotics?
  2. What  Is The Best Way To Get Them?
  3. What Should I Expect After Taking Them?

Let’s take a look at each of these questions.

Why Should I Take Probiotics?

Probiotics are bacteria. You may be thinking why you would want to put bacteria in your body. You may be surprised to know that there are 10x as many bacteria in your body as human cells. This seems counterintuitive because every time you get sick your doctor tells you its an infection and gives you an antibiotic.

A majority of the bacteria that live in the body are beneficial to us. They help us to digest food and aid in the formulation of different molecules that are body requires. There are many different types of bacteria that do different tasks in the digestive tract.

There are also bacteria that are not beneficial to us. These are the ones that can cause infection if they get to prevalent in our system. Your medical doctor will often prescribe an antibiotic to get rid of this infection. Unfortunately, antibiotics kill bacteria indiscriminately. They kill the beneficial bacteria as well as the harmful ones.

Our body is a balancing act. If we have the right amount of good bacteria in our systems and maintain them by eating a healthy diet, then the bad bacteria have a much harder time building a colony. This is why you are susceptible to a secondary infection after being on antibiotics, because there is more room for the bad bacteria build a colony. This is why I always recommend taking probiotics during and after a course of antibiotics.

Bad bacteria thrive on sugar. Your diet plays a big role in your health. You can feed the good bacteria or the bad bacteria based on your food choices. This is often why we see a spike in sickness during the winter months when we indulge in the sweet treats. We are feeding the bad bacteria and allowing them to get a foothold in our system.

What Is The Best Way To Get Them?

Any way you can is the short answer. I always recommend that you get a variety of probiotics. There are many different strains that help to digest different things. If you just focus on one strain, you are not getting the variety that you need.

For example, the probiotic in yogurt only helps you to digest dairy. That is great, but you also need bacteria to help you digest meat, fruits, and vegetables. Sauerkraut also contains beneficial bacteria, as do kefir and kombucha. Eating a combination of these types of foods is the best ways I recommend to get probiotics.

Most people don’t have the time or don’t want the hassle of doing this every day. For those people, taking a pill is the best option. An important note if you are going to take a probiotic in pill form is that it should contain a variety of different bacteria. What Should I Expect After Taking Probiotics?

There is often some gassiness that goes along with taking probiotics. As the colonies start to form and become predominate, the bad bacteria begin to die off can cause some gas and bloating. The ultimate goal is to just feel healthy. If you feed your body right, the bad bacteria does not have a good chance to get a foothold.

You should only have to take probiotics for about a month. Once the colonies are established and as long as you are eating healthy and feeding them the right things, it is not necessary to keep taking them. If you indulge in the processed foods full of sugar and salt, it may be necessary to take a course every few months to help maintain your colonies.
